Our interpretation of Epicureanism

We have already talked about Epicureanism and what it meant in ancient Greek society. Let us apply it to the current world and with that the current values of today's society. In this day and age speed is of the essence. Fast- and quick happiness is a byproduct of modernity and the free time we as humans have gained over the centuries.
What does this mean for our vision? It means that we at Hedeaux think that happiness lies in pleasure. Pleasure can be found everywhere, it lies in the small things but also in the big things. Friendship is a key factor in both Epicureanism and Hedeauxnism. Epicurus found this in an almost celibate lifestyle, living with his friends in The Garden of Epicurus. He lived the dream we all have had at one time in our life: buying a big home and living in it with al our friends. But in this day and age we believe happiness can also be found in more than a friendship. It can be found in love, by which we mean romantic relations. It means that we can find happiness and pleasure in going out with friends but also in going out with someone who maybe more than a friend. It means that it can be found going out dancing in the centre of Amsterdam or any city for that matter. In this day and age, in contrary to what Epicurus preaches, pleasure can be found in the big long term happiness but also in the small short term happiness. Sex, partying, travelling for us are of the same importance as mental health, learning and meditating. The purpose of life is to live it and whatever that purpose of life maybe for you, do it with passion.
